Tech Features
MINI BRAIN REAR SHOCK, WITH NEW XC TUNE
WHAT Externally tunable, trail-sensing rear shock with AUTOSAG, pioneered by Specialized and manufactured by Fox. All-new shock tune with new internals makes this the best Epic shock ever.
WHY AUTOSAG assures perfect shock setup every time, while the new Brain tune offers the best efficiency and control over smooth and rough terrain.
HOW When a rider encounters bump forces, the Mini Brain’s inertia valve disengages, allowing oil to flow and the shock to immediately transition from firm (efficient) to fully active (compliant) suspension settings. The external Brain Fade dial allows riders to fine tune their suspension.
XC DOUBLE CRANKS
WHAT XC-specific double cranks spec’d on all Epic models.
WHY Double cranks are lighter, better shifting, and provide more useable/less redundant gears, better ground clear- ance, and less chain drop.
HOW Knowing what is appropriate for XC riders and keeping in touch with trends allows us to build a better riding bikes.
X-12 142+ REAR END
WHAT Integrated frame/rear hub design that goes beyond standard 135 or 142mm rear ends.
WHY Creates a stiffer wheel and more stable system. Also makes it easier to take the wheel in and out.
HOW Since we design and engineer our bikes and components to work together, we were able to move the entire cassette mechanism on our Roval wheel 2mm out from the standard size hub, then adjust the frame width accordingly. This integrated design widens spoke stance for more stiffness and stability. The X-12 threaded axle, unlike a standard QR, allows the wheel to be taken in and out of the frame easily thanks to wheel guides on the dropouts.
AUTOSAG SUSPENSION TUNING
WHAT Revolutionary SBC technology, manufactured by Fox, automatically sets the proper sag and air pressure in your shock.
WHY Quicker and easier sag adjustment that guarantees the perfect setting for optimal suspension performance. Perfect for quickly setting up suspension for shop test rides.
HOW In the saddle, the rider pushes the specially designed transfer port on the shock to release air pressure until a set level, based on the rider’s weight. This equalizes the positive and negative chambers and achieves perfect sag.
COMPETITIVE XC GEOMETRY
WHAT Fast-handling frame geometry form- ulated for the Competitive XC experience.
WHY Creates an aggressive (or more for- ward) riding position for precision handling on cross-country trails and courses.
HOW By using a short rear end, low bottom bracket, and roomy top tube, riders get a more nimble, maneuverable bike with room to stretch out and stay centered over the bike. The Epic features a tighter, race-oriented wheelbase designed for agile handling in tight trail situations.
CARBON RIMS
WHAT Roval Control SL 29 wheelsets (S-Works model) and Roval Control Carbon 29 wheelset (Marathon model).
WHY Reduces weight, increases stiffness and durability, and absorbs impact better than alloy wheels.
HOW We designed ultra-lightweight, carbon 29er wheelsets with wide rims to accept large-volume tires. The carbon rim is stronger and stiffer than alloy, so the wheels remain in-true longer, and absorb impact better. The combination of cross-laced and radial-laced spokes also reduces weight and improves overall strength.
